Beneath the Surface

The story goes that many years ago an art dealer offered what he described as an 18th century French painting to Alfred Dupont - artwork purporting to be a Dupont ancestor. When the dealer asked for $25,000 (a large sum at the time) a suspicious Dupont hesitated, so the dealer dropped the price first to $10,000 and finally to $1000. Reasoning that the frame was worth at least $400. Dupont bought it at the lowest price.

Later he had an art expert examine the painting, and learned that while it was indeed a fake, the "ancestor" portrait was actually an (more)...

End of Problem

Bill wiped off the counter of his snack bar as he scanned the beach and looked for customers. He'd been busy that day at his lemonade stand since it had been so hot. Still, just as he was about to close up a man stepped over to the counter and ordered lemonade. Bill filled a paper cup from the cooler, and set it back down. The man paid him, then picked up the cup.

"Splash!"

The lemonade hit Bill right in the face, sending him back a few steps, grasping and sputtering.

"I'm so sorry!" The man put down the (more)...

God Is Real!

Read Hebrews 11:1-13.

Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
-Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

IT was the last day before Thanksgiving break, and I had given each child in my first-grade classroom an opportunity to tell the class what he or she was thankful for. As I went from one raised hand to another, I heard the usual responses: my family, food, my house, our dog, my bike.

One student, however, was reluctant to voice what was in his heart. Instead, he asked if he could whisper into my ear what he was most thankful for. I bent down and placed my ear near his small face. "I'm just thankful that God is real and not pretend," he said quietly.

"God is real." This child's words challenged me. Because God is real, I can believe in the Bible. Because God is real, I can trust; I have nothing to fear. God will be faithful to hear my prayers and to meet my every need.

The life-changing truth that child confided is one to be boldly proclaimed to others. This young boy was right: God's realness is something to be thankful for. When we grasp the realness of our God, we are filled with gratitude.
